How to buy skis? Many people have no clue when it comes to buying skis so here are a few tips to make sure your time spent looking at and buying skis is spent wisely.
What Size ski should I ski on? Here is the best rule for sizing your skis: Beginner- Shoulder length to bottom of your chin, Intermediate- Tip of your nose, Expert eyebrows to the top of your head.
What type of ski to choose? The ski you choose is not as much about ability level as it is about where you ski. Where do you spend your days on the hill? Groomers? Moguls? Crud? Powder? Everything? If it is groomers its a carving ski, Moguls-All mtn/all mtn twin tip, Crud/powder- mid fat, Powder- Powder ski.
If you are looking for the one ski quiver the size ski you want is 100mm waist size. It may be 98 up to 108mm but this is the new all mtn/mid fat waist you need to have.
I have skied almost every new ski out there and while there are many great skis I can tell you my personal favorites. KAstle BMX 98, Atomic Access, Armada TST for my one pair quiver. For powder I have to say the Atomic Atlas is sweet in the new 182 length and this is because I still like a straight tail. If you tend to like the new rockered Powder boards the Atomic Bent Chetler and the Armada JJ are hard to beat.
For womens powder skis I would definitely check out the Kastle BMX 118 its the best womens powder ski on the market right now.
As far as carving skis go the Kastle LX 72 and 82 are divine for beginer intermediate women and the LX 82 and LX 92 for Men. If you are a more agressive skier and want to carve the MX 78 and MX 88 by Kastle cannot be beat. The KAstle carvers are like drinking champagne and the rest of the skis are Keystone Light Beer. Not kidding!
My rule of thumb for how to buy skis is also simple when it comes to days of use. If you ski less than 20 days per year do not buy skis you should demo them. $50 per day is $1,000 for the year and you do not have to travel with, tune, wax them and you get the best ski for the conditions every day.
Where do you do your skiing? I ski in Steamboat, CO the majority of the time and becaue there are so many trees I tend to keep my ski length in the 182 range even though I am 6′ 2″ 220 pnds and a former World Cup Ski Racer.
When I go to Alaska, JAckson Hole, Alta, Snowbird, South America, etc I take a longer pair like a 191. I ski faster and the turn radius is longer(bigger). You should buy a pair of skis that is for your main skiing interests and home mountain not the pipe dream powder days or hoping you get to use them on a vacation due to an epic storm.
Remember, how to buy skis, is more about knowing yourself and where you ski more than it is about what skis to pick out. There are a lot of good skis on sale but knowing what you need means the salesperson isn’t making decisions for you in the store.
Make sure you visit http://www.fleischersport.com, call the store at 970-870-0900 if you have questions about how to buy skis or stop in any time. We are are located at the base of the Steamboat Ski Area in the One Steamboat Place Building next to Surefoot, Steamboat Ski School office and the Steamboat gondola.

Skiing Steamboat Springs can be one of the most memorable and incredible ski vacations of your and your families lives. While Steamboat does not offer the night life and events found at many ski areas what is does offer is truly unique. Champagne Powder, uncrowded runs, some of the best tree skiing found anywhere in the world, a deeply rooted western heritage and very warm and friendly people.
Known as one of the best Resorts for families there are many options to choose from to have fun on and off the slopes. Snow tubing, Snowmobile tours, ice skating, ziplining and sking and snowboarding.
Steamboat is also home to Kids Rent Free at Fleischer Sport. With any adult ski or snowboard rental your child 12 and under rents free. No minimum days required. Skiing in Steamboat and getting ski and snowboard rentals for you and your family has never been better or easier with this program.
What is the best ski rental package for kids? Kids gear is pretty standard but it is important to get your kids on and into gear that isn’t too old. MAny rental companies recycle their gear for years and years for kids so be sure your kids aren’t stuck in rear entry boots with skis that are untuned, unwaxed and more or less junked out. One example of great gear is the Fleischer Sport kids packages. Nothing in the store is more than 1 year old for kids and adults and you can be assured it has the latest technology, fits well, is finely tuned and ready to perform for you on the hill.
What is the best rental ski package for adults? For adults it varies by height, weight, size and ability level but genrally speaking a beginner can get away with a performance package and any mid to high level skier will want the demo package. Skis and snowboard rentals are a lot like car rentals. Do you ned them for specifics or just to get you down the ski mountain? If it is a point A to point B thing go with perfromance package but if you actually have expectations from your equipment go with a demo package.
Demo boots are always worth upgrading to. Boots are your connection point between your body and your skis so if you are skiing in Steamboat and want the right set up be sure and start with great ski boots.
Fleiscehr Sport in Steamboat Springs carries the best ski and snowboard rentals in Steamboat Springs and is located next to the Steamboat gondola. Voted Steamboat’s number one ski shop two years in a row! We also are the only ski shop to offer the Kids Always Rent Free program, we also pioneered the program!
